Labour Intensive Construction
Poverty and the high level of unemployment are two of South Africa’s most pressing problems. The poverty is illustrated by the acknowledged need for housing and infrastructure. One of the causes for the infrastructure backlog is the lack of capacity and skills at institutional, community and individual levels. Urban renewal and inner city regeneration are a priority for the South African Government. Commitment to alleviation of poverty is another issue that has become very high on the government agenda. To maximise the number of people involved in urban renewal projects and to alleviate poverty a labour intensive approach is used. Not only should the approach alleviate poverty, but also train and educate the labourers. (Tschwale, 2006)
During the study tour a lecture related to the subject Labour Intensive Construction is planned. The lecture about labour intensive construction will most likely be accommodated by LiteWorks and the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg).

South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL)
The South African government, represented by the minister of Transport, is SANRAL’s sole shareholder and owner of the agency. SANRAL’s mandate is to develop maintain and manage South Africa’s 16 500 kilometre national road network.
During the study tour SANRAL’s northern regional office (Pretoria) will be visited and most likely SANRAL will tell us more about the traffic problems in the Gauteng province and the approach that SANRAL uses to mitigate and solve these issues.
One of the bigger traffic and transport problems in the Gauteng area are the congestion problems on the roads. SANRAL uses a broad approach to reduce the congestion problems and make transport possible and affordable for everyone. Ongoing projects in this field are the construction of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link and the use of Rapid Bus Systems, Intelligent Transport Systems and toll roads.

Water Research Commission
The Water Research Commission (WRC) is a research institute which supports sustainable development through research funding, knowledge creation and dissemination. The WRC has multiple key strategic areas: Water Resource Management, Water-Linked Ecosystems, Water Use and Waste Management and Water Utilisation in Agriculture.
The excursion during the study tour to the WRC will most likely be related to the conservation and wise use of wetlands. This probably will be combined with an excursion to the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, one of the world’s largest urban nature reserves located in the Gauteng province.
