Construction of the King Shaka International Airport (Group Five)
Durban’s current International Airport is the smallest of South Africa’s international airports. In 2006 there was a go-ahead for the construction of a new airport: the King Shaka International Airport. The new airport is expected to replace the Durban International Airport. The King Shaka International airport will have a significantly longer runway and will enable the airport to handle the biggest aircrafts like the Airbus A380. The airport is expected to be operational in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Port upgrade in Durban (Group Five)
To maintain South Africa’s gateway function airports and ports in several cities are being upgraded. In Durban a new airport will be built and the port will be extended. At the moment the Port of Durban is the busiest container port in the Southern Hemisphere. To stimulate economic growth and meet the new demand requirements South African’s busiest container port will be extended.
South African infrastructure company Group Five has been awarded a R1.8 billion contract to expand the Port of Durban. The Port will be widened and by deepened and a total volume of 7.000.000 cubic metres will be dredged in the next two years.
Construction of the Moses Mabhida stadium (Group Five)
Part of the city’s plans for the FIFA World Cup, the Kings Park Soccer Stadium was demolished in late 2006 to make way for a new stadium which will be one of the host stadiums for the 2010 FIFA World Cup: The Moses Mabhida Stadium.
At the moment the construction of the stadium with a capacity of 70.000 has started and is expected to be finished in 2009. In 2009 the Moses Mabhida Stadium will be a host stadium for the FIFA Confederations Cup as well.
